The Importance of Jesus & Mary in Islam

On the Feast of the Epiphany, which celebrates the spiritual meaning of the birth of Jesus for the Christian community, we will be joined by Imam Mohamad Bashar Arafat, who will bring the greetings and prayers of the Maryland Muslim community for our community as we mark the conclusion of our Christmas celebration.

Imam Bashar will join us for the 11:30 Mass and will speak at a reception after Mass on the esteem and respect that Islam and the Q'uaran have for Jesus and his mother Mary.  This occasion will be a wonderful opportunity to learn more about this and to continue to building better understanding between our religious communities.

Simbang Gabi (Dec 15-23)

Simbang Gabi is a Filipino Christmas tradition. It is a series of nine dawn masses on the days leading up to Christmas. It begins on December 15 and ends on the 23rd of December, when a culmination mass and Fellowship is held.

The tradition of Simbang Gabi continues at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart with the nativity scene or Belen in the Church as one of the focal points with baby Jesus in a manger with Mother Mary, Saint Joseph and the three wise men carrying their gifts to the infant Jesus and the star of Bethlehem that guided them in their journey. Over the years, Filipino communities have made some changes in the way that this event is celebrated. T

he Shrine of the Sacred Heart Parish celebrates Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo at around 7:00 in the evening in order to accommodate the needs of the community who have different work schedules.

Spaghetti Lunch Fundraiser

The Shrine's Nativity Play will be hosting a spaghetti lunch fundraiser after the 11:30 AM Mass on November 17th.  This will be a good opportunity to fellowship with other Shrine parishioners and help raise funds for the Shrine's Nativity Play this holiday season!

Hark at the Heart

The Shrine’s Religious Education classes celebrate Advent and Christmas in this annual event held in the church between 10:30 and 11:00. All are welcome!  The children perform songs, skits and recitations putting everyone in the Christmas spirit.  A light reception follows in the Undercroft.

A Nativity Story

The Shrine of the Sacred Heart in cooperation with GIG Community Theater & Couples for Christ Present:

A Nativity Story

This Christmas, let us all exalt and celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ through a marvelous play of the Nativity!

The play is written by Gregg DeGuzman, along with parishioners Lourdes and Leo White.  It tells the story from the Annunciation to the Birth of Jesus. Parishioners and friends of the parish not only fill the acting roles, but also have come together to build the sets, sew costumes, publish a program and sell ads to support the associated costs of the production. This is a heartwarming community effort befitting the story of Jesus’ birth!

The professionally directed play will be performed on Sunday, December 15th at 4:00 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m.
